NEIGHBORHOODS DAY - 2010

Back

ARISE Detroit! extends to all Detroiters (inside and outside the city) an invitation to participate in a great new Annual event for Detroit. It’s called ARISE Detroit! Neighborhoods Day: Renewing the Village, held Saturday, August 7, 2010.

What is most unique about this effort is that it is not an event held in just one place, much like many downtown celebrations. Instead, it is held simultaneously; in neighborhoods all over the city on the same day. We hope you will plan an event in your neighborhood and be a part of this day.

The goal is to reconnect city residents with each other, learn about community programs and re-embrace the neighborly spirit that many of us grew up with years ago.The first annual Neighborhoods Day, held on August 4, 2007, featured events at more than 50 sites throughout the city. City cultural institutions were also involved with special activities, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Public Library, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy.

Neighborhoods Day was strongly supported by Detroit and Wayne County government leaders, church groups, business organizations and the health care community. It was also supported by the Skillman Foundation, a major funder of ARISE Detroit. Your participation can help make this year’s event bigger and better than the last three years celebrating this day.

We encourage you to find your own activity that best reflects your community’s needs and interests. Last year, some groups had neighborhood parades, cleanups, picnics or anti-crime marches. Some groups gave out scholarships and others held recreational activities. Many sites had free health screenings from local health institutions.

The day produced positive media coverage for participating groups and organizations and helped instill a spirit of hope throughout the city.

"ARISE Detroit! Neighborhoods Day was a beacon of kindness and fellowship much needed for a neighborhood trying to come back to its greatness," said Patricia Woods, of the Arden Park East Block Club Association.

For a $50 registration fee, your organization will receive your own customized banner, T-shirts, a neighborhood "tool kit," which is a package of information on city services and programs. More importantly, you will be connected to other like-minded groups all over the city who will be part of this special day for Detroit.

We look forward to your participation. Simply visit our web site at www.arisedetroit.org to register or call us at 313-921-1955. We are happy to assist you.

Yours for a better Detroit,

Luther Keith,
Executive Director
